Welcome to the new Rando Ramble blog site.
The next ride will be this Sunday, June 3rd.
This year, I’ve been itching to develop a new ride that would take me out to explore the the Gettysburg battlefields. I quickly realized that even the shortest A to B routes are 100+ miles roundtrip, so I knew the route would be long. But, hey! the days are also long this time of year and we might as well take advantage.
The Gettysburg Campaign is a double metric with a little over 8,000ft. of climb to it. It took me longer than I had imagined to pull this route together, but I think I’ve got a good one. A ride this long is time-consuming to do on-bike reconnoissance. I put in a lot of miles checking out various pieces of this route, revising and doing checkouts of the revisions. I will be riding the complete route as it is currently cued for the very first time with you on Sunday.
The first 30 miles is mostly on two roads- Park Heights and Hanover Pike. This will allow us to just put our heads down and get up to PA. By the time we cross the Mason Dixon the route flattens, giving us alternating scenes of rolling farmland and dark forest. In no time at all we’ll be carving through the beautiful, melancholic terrain of the battlefields, dodging history nerds and catching glimpses of the hundreds (thousands?) of memorials there. We head into town for lunch at the Garryowen Pub.
The return leg is quite similar in reverse. Another cruise through the west side of the battlefield park and quickly back into PA country. We’ll go through Taneytown, Union Bridge and make a rest stop in New Windsor before heading back along Deer Park rd and into the city. The return into the hills of B’more county is tiring, but we’ll be smelling the barn at that point.
